When Night Falls, the Lights Come On at Shompole Conservancy, Kenya

In southern Kenya, Shompole is a land of wild, dusty landscapes, deep silence and endless horizons. Shompole Conservancy is a wildlife conservation area located in the southern Rift Valley, between Lake Magadi and Lake Natron. Managed by the Maasai community, it is characterised by natural environments still closely connected to the rhythms of the African wilderness. Shompole Wilderness Camp is an eco-friendly tented camp nestled in this wild landscape. From here, visitors can access the Shompole Hides, specialised photographic hides that offer the opportunity to observe and photograph wildlife at close range, including during the night.

At sunset, as the last colours of the sky give way to darkness, the lights of the hides come on in the African night. Their glow creates an intimate and evocative atmosphere, standing out against the darkness of the surrounding savannah. Through these photographs, I wanted to capture this very moment: the transition from day to night, when small lights become landmarks in the landscape and offer an unusual perspective on the lives of wild animals.

It is a vision of African wildlife far removed from the more familiar images of traditional safaris, a world of atmosphere, silence and nocturnal impressions, where light does more than simply illuminate the scene: it becomes an integral part of the photographic story.
